Hack of the Week: Meeting Follow-up

by Josh on April 14, 2009

I love meeting with students, and I tend to end every meeting full of good intentions: intentions to meet with them again soon, to write them an encouraging note, or research a tough question that came up in our conversation. Unfortunately, a few minutes after the meeting I’m back in the craziness of everyday life, and I totally forget about all the stuff that I planned to do. Result? I don’t get around to a follow-up meeting for weeks or longer, I never send the note and I forget to look into the question. After doing this a few times, I decided enough was enough.

Here’s the solution: Take a few moments immediately following your meetings, whether its in the meeting place or in your car, and write down all of the follow-up steps you want to take. Yes, I mean all of them. From there, add items to your to-do list, calendar or reminder system as needed.  It’s a great way to break through to the next level relationally with students in your community.
